San Francisco District
Dredging project for San Rafael Creek from Army corps web site.
SAN RAFAEL CREEK (O&M)
CALIFORNIA
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Provides for 7 and 4-year cycle
maintenance dredging, respectively, for the Across the Flats Channel to
-8 feet Mean Lower Low Water (MLLW) in San Francisco Bay to the mouth of
San Rafael Creek; thence -6 feet MLLW for the Inner Canal Channel to the
head of navigation at the Grand Street Bridge in the City of San Rafael.
The Across the Flats portion has always been authorized for unconfined
in-Bay aquatic disposal at site SF-11 south of Alcatraz Island.
Originally the sponsor (City of San Rafael) provided an upland site for
the Inner Canal portion of the project, but the site is no longer
available, therefore, the sponsor pays for an additional cost
differential for alternative disposal at SF-11. The sponsor is
obligated to provide an adequate upland disposal site for containment of
material unsuitable for unconfined aquatic disposal, located in the
upper Turning Basin. Since the sponsor has been unable to
provide such a site for recent past dredging episodes, this area was not
dredged.
FISCAL YEAR 01 BUDGET: $0
PRESENT STATUS: Maintenance dredging of the Across the
Flats Channel was last completed in November 1997 and the Inner Canal
Channel in March 1992. Sediment sampling and testing in the upper
Turning Basin was performed in FY 98 to determine future upland disposal
needs for this area. This project is a shallow-draft, mainly light
commercial and recreational channel.
FUTURE EFFORTS: The Across the Flats Channel is
scheduled for maintenance dredging in FY 04 and the Inner Canal Channel
for FY 01. The sponsor has expressed interest in the possibility
of establishing a new upland disposal site under the federal
cost-sharing provisions contained in the 1996 Water Resources
Development Act (WRDA).
